Everybody who has visited Casa do Caminho will know the importance of having a quality transport.

The main centre of Casa do Caminho is situated at the beautiful outskirts of the Tingua Biological Reserve with the objective to take children away for urban trouble zones and growing up in the middle of nature. This has 1 big negative side: “The extremely difficult access”.

We have driven a Volkswagen pick-up for almost 10 years. This car has been used optimally. On a daily basis, it has transported children, food, furniture, tools, construction materials, wood for the stove.

The road up to Casa do Caminho is a dirt road that curls around the mountain, 30 minutes by car. When it is dry it reasonably easy to pass. However in the rain season it impossible to drive the Kombi easily over the road. The Volkswagen Kombi is a city car. The last 2 years the car would break down on a monthly basis with maintenance costs of approx. 1000 Reals a month. On top of that we often had to rent a car to pick up the main donations.

We did a lot of research which car we would have to buy. We needed a car that can handle the tough work, can carry a large load of cargo and doesn’t break down easily. If it breaks down we need cheap maintenance. Each and everybody told us to buy a “Toyota Bandeirante”. They are old cars but in case well maintained excellent for the job. It has a Mercedes truck engine and is pure reinforced iron. It can carry 2000 kilos and in the rainy season it easily ploughs through the mud.

We like to thank Zusters Carmelittesen, the Elizabeth Strouven Foundation and Family Bijen from the Netherlands for their generous donations.
